There is a large and growing group of accommodation providers who have suffered severe damage to both reputation and enquiry rate as a result of untrue malicious reviews on Tripadvisor.com.
The problem has recently been compounded by Google, who are now including these reviews (which are unverified) in their normal organic results of accommodation searches.  It has been reported that VisitBritain is also now doing this.
A B&B may appear at the top of a page 1 Google search, but it could have an untrue malicious review as part of the second line of the description !! 

Tripadvisor (and Google) reviews are unchecked and largely unmonitored, so it is open to abuse.  Posting untrue or malicious reviews is illegal in the UK, but few British businesses have the resources to prosecute them and Tripadvisor is extremely unresponsive to complaints.  Using Tripadvisor ensures this will continue.  As usual, the few are wrecking things for the majority.
Please boycott Tripadvisor.com.  A significant drop in usage may persuade the site to be more diligent.
