Withypool is an ancient village in the
centre of the Exmoor National Park in Somerset.
It takes approximately 40 minutes by road from J27 of the M5
motorway.
The dramatic coastline to the north is about 30 minutes drive
across some of the most beautiful scenery in England.
There are sandy beaches, high cliffs clad in ancient oak
woodland, heather moorland and deep combes. Wild ponies and red
deer roam freely.
The six-arched bridge over the River Barle is
just a stones throw from the village shop. There is a lovely
riverside walk from here westwards to Lanacre Bridge, another
famous beauty spot. There are lots of walks from Withypool, many of
them circular, to suit most abilities.
The River Barle is
designated an SSSI or Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The river originates about 12 miles NW of Withypool and joins
the River Exe just south of Dulverton, 12 miles down river from
Withypool. In it, or along its banks you may see otters,
kingfishers, dippers, salmon, brook lamprey, bullhead, grayling
and brown trout. The Beautiful Demoiselle, the Golden-ringed
Dragon Fly and a number of rare water beetles can also be found
here. |
